Each platform has a guided setup installer that installs the desktop app, the control plane, a database and an agent, and connects them for you. Download the installer for your computer from the PS-pocketEdge downloads page, then follow the steps below.
Quick or Custom install
Every installer starts by asking how you want to install:
- Quick install — uses detected or recommended choices and shows you a review before anything is installed. Best for most people.
- Custom install — lets you choose each part: your container runtime (Docker or Podman), whether to create a private PostgreSQL database or use an existing one, the install and data folders, and whether services start automatically when you log in.
You can also choose to connect to an existing PS-pocketEdge server instead of running everything locally. In that mode only the desktop app is installed, and it signs in to the server you name.
macOS
- Requires macOS 14 (Sonoma) or newer, on Apple Silicon or Intel.
- Open the Setup disk image and run PS-pocketEdge Setup.
- Containers run in Colima (Docker) or a Podman machine. Docker Desktop is never installed. Quick install reuses a running Colima if it finds one.
- The app installs to Applications. Your data lives in ~/Library/Application Support/PSpocketEdge/LocalSetup.
- The build is not yet notarized by Apple. If macOS blocks it, open System Settings → Privacy & Security and choose Open Anyway.
A separate "Desktop app only" disk image is also available. It installs just the app, for a Mac that already runs the control plane itself; it connects to localhost:8080. To connect a Mac to a control plane on another machine, use the Setup installer and choose an existing server.
Windows
- Requires Windows 11 22H2 or newer on an Intel/AMD x64 processor with virtualization enabled, and at least 8 GB of free disk space.
- Run the Setup installer. It installs for your user account only.
- Containers run inside a dedicated WSL2 Ubuntu environment named PS-pocketEdge, using Docker Engine or Podman. Docker Desktop is not required. Your other WSL distributions are left alone.
- If WSL needs to be turned on, Windows asks for administrator permission. If it then asks you to restart, restart and run Setup again — it continues where it stopped.
- The installer is not yet code-signed. If SmartScreen shows "Windows protected your PC", click More info, then Run anyway.
Uninstalling from Windows Settings removes the app, its shortcuts and its login startup entry. It keeps the WSL environment, databases and setup data so you do not lose anything by accident.
Ubuntu 24.04
- Requires Ubuntu 24.04 LTS desktop on amd64 (Intel/AMD) or arm64. Other distributions are not supported yet.
- Download the .run file for your hardware, open a terminal in that folder and run it as your normal user, without sudo.
- Setup asks before installing anything it needs, and uses the standard administrator prompt for system changes. The app and services run as your user.
- The app installs to ~/.local/opt/ps-pocketedge and appears in your Applications menu.

The downloads page lists a SHA-256 checksum for every installer. Comparing it with the checksum of your downloaded file confirms the file is complete and unchanged. On macOS and Linux run shasum -a 256 <file> or sha256sum <file>; on Windows run Get-FileHash <file> in PowerShell.
