Networks and volumes

Connect containers to each other, and keep, browse and copy container data.

Networks

Containers on the same network can reach each other by container name. The Networks screen shows Docker's built-in networks and any you create.

  • Create network — choose a server, a name and a driver. Tick Internal to block all outside connectivity.
  • Connect container or Disconnect to change which containers are on a network.
  • Remove network to delete one you no longer need.

Volumes

Named volumes keep container data across restarts and recreates. The Volumes screen shows each volume's size and which containers use it. Turn on Orphaned only to find volumes nothing is using.

Browse and edit files

Open a volume and click Browse files to look through its folders. You can download any file up to 1 MiB. Administrators can also edit text files and upload files up to 1 MiB, once every container using the volume has stopped.

Clone a volume

Clone volume copies an unused volume to a new named volume on the same server — handy before trying a risky change.

Attach a volume to a container

Docker cannot attach or detach a volume on a running container. To change a container's volumes, edit its configuration and recreate it; it stops briefly while that happens.

Deleting a volume permanently deletes all the data in it. You are asked to type the volume's name to confirm. Force delete removes a volume that is still in use, which can break the containers using it.

File browsing uses a small temporary helper container, so the server needs access to the busybox:latest image.

Example: inspect a configuration file safely

  1. Open the named volume and choose Browse files. Read or download a small configuration file first.
  2. To edit it, stop every container using the volume, make the change and save.
  3. Restart the containers and check their logs. Keep the original file so you can restore it if the application rejects the new configuration.
